Directions: 죄송한데, ___ 어디예요?

One sentence pattern and the whole city becomes a map.

Fill in the blank: 죄송한데, 명동 어디예요? (excuse me, where is Myeongdong?). Koreans will walk you to the door rather than point. This is 정 (jeong) in motion.

The answer will contain 쪽 (direction): 이쪽 (this way), 저쪽 (that way), 왼쪽 (left), 오른쪽 (right). 지도 (map) and 역 (station) are the other two pillars. 가까워요 (close) means ten minutes; 멀어요 (far) means take the subway.

Emergency reverse-engineering: if you understand nothing, 다시 한번 말해 주세요 (please say it again) and 천천히 말해 주세요 (slowly, please). Asking twice is polite. Nodding and walking the wrong way for 20 minutes is the rookie mistake.

Say these

  • 죄송한데, 화장실 어디예요?

    joesonghande, hwajangsir eodiyeyo?

    sorry, where's the restroom?

  • 이쪽이요

    ijjogiyo

    it's this way

  • 멀어요? 가까워요?

    meoreoyo? gakkaweoyo?

    is it far? close?

  • 천천히 말해 주세요

    cheoncheonhi malhae juseyo

    please speak slowly

Check

  1. The polite opener before asking directions

  2. You didn't catch a word. Best recovery:
