누나 (noona): older sister, from a man's side of the conversation

누나 is the word for an older sister when a younger man says it. 누나 is not a word for "sister" in general — it is one of four, and which one you use depends on who is speaking and who is listening. Get this one wrong and you will address a woman in the wrong register, which in Korea is a small but unmistakable social error.

The rule that explains all four words

Korean kinship words for older siblings are built around the speaker's gender, and the speaker's gender changes the word — not the person being talked about. A man calls an older woman 누나; a woman calls an older woman 언니; both of them call an older man 형 or 오빠 depending on their own gender. The older person being addressed is a woman in the first two cases, and a man in the last two.

This is the single thing that trips up Korean learners, because in English the word for a relative is the same regardless of who says it. Once you internalise that the speaker's gender selects the form, the whole set of words sorts itself out.

  • 누나 — older sister, said by a man
  • 언니 — older sister, said by a woman
  • 누이 — older sister, gender-neutral, mostly written or formal
  • 오빠 — older brother, said by a woman
  • 형 — older brother, said by a man
  • 동생 — younger sibling, said by anyone

누나 outside the family

In Korea, 누나 and 언니 are not strictly family words. Younger men call older female colleagues 누나 and younger women call them 언니, and it is genuinely affectionate rather than condescending as long as the age gap is real. The same logic applies to 오빠 and 형 for male colleagues.

The rule of thumb: if the person is meaningfully older and you are comfortable using 반말 (informal speech) with them, 누나/언니 works. If you are still on 해요체 with them, stay with 선배, 누나님, or just their name and title.

How to actually say it

In casual speech with a friend, 누나 is often shortened to 누이 in fast speech, and even to 누 when you are very close — the same way 오빠 becomes 오 and 언니 becomes 언. Calling someone 누 on the street is affectionate and very common among close people; using it with someone you just met is not.

The word 누나 also has a long history in Korean pop culture — it is one of the most recognisable words in K-drama and K-pop vocabulary, which is why it shows up in song titles and fan nicknames constantly.

Questions people actually ask

Is 누나 rude?

No, but it is intimate. Using 누나 for a woman who is older than you but whom you do not know, or with whom you have not established an informal relationship, can read as overstepping. If you are unsure, use her name or 선배, or add 님 — 누나님 — to make it respectful.

Should I use 누나 or 언니 as a woman?

If you are female, use 언니 for an older woman — including older female colleagues and close friends. 누나 is a man's word. If you are male, 누나 is the right form, and it works with older female colleagues too.

What about 누이?

누이 is the neutral, register-safe form of older sister. You will see it in written Korean, in dictionaries, and in formal or descriptive contexts. In actual conversation, people overwhelmingly use 누나 or 언니.

How do I say "younger sister"?

동생 is the neutral word for a younger sibling. Specify the sex with 여동생 (younger sister) and 남동생 (younger brother). A man referring to his own younger sibling will usually just say 동생.
