짐보관: where to leave your bags in Korea
짐보관서비스 — luggage storage — is the service that lets you drop a bag between checkout and check-in, or between two sightseeing stops. Subway stations, train terminals and tourist districts all run it, usually as coin lockers you pay by the hour or the day. Here is where to find them, what it costs, and how to ask for one.

Two kinds of luggage storage
코인사물함 is a coin locker: a metal compartment with a keypad, sized in a few standard dimensions, released by inserting the right coin or card. It is cheap, instant, and unattended, which makes it ideal for a few hours. 짐보관 데스크 is a staffed counter where you hand over your bag and get a claim ticket; it takes oversized luggage, and usually costs more.
For a day trip with a suitcase, the staffed desk is the right choice — coin lockers are designed for backpacks and small bags, and trying to force a cabin case into a small compartment is how you end up paying for a large one at 3am.
Where the lockers actually are
Every major subway station has some form of storage, but the scale varies enormously. 서울역 has both a staffed 짐보관 데스크 and rows of large lockers, which makes it the single most useful place in the country if you are passing through. 명동, 홍대입구, 강남역 and the big department stores near them have dense rows of coin lockers because of constant tourist traffic.
Away from the centre, coverage thins out. Plan around the station you are actually near rather than assuming a city has them everywhere — a quick search for 짐보관소 plus the station name in a map app gives you the pin and the opening hours.
- 서울역 — the biggest, staffed counter plus large lockers, open longest
- 명동 · 을지로 — dense coin lockers in the shopping streets
- 홍대입구 · 연남동 — lockers near the station exit
- 강남역 · 역삼역 — large locker banks in the underground concourse
- 부산역 — staffed counter and lockers for the KTX arrival
- 김포공항 · 제주공항 — limited; airport terminals are not the place to rely on it
Sizing and cost
Small lockers take a daypack or a small suitcase and run roughly 3,000–4,000 won for a day. Large lockers take a check-in case and run roughly 5,000–6,000. Hourly rates are common too, at a few hundred won per hour, and the staffed desk typically charges by the day with a higher ceiling.
Two details that catch visitors out: the daily maximum is a cap, so staying four hours and paying for a day is normal, but staying twenty-four hours and paying for one day is not. And the deposit on the staffed desk is normally returned when you collect the bag, so keep the ticket.

Questions people actually ask
Can I leave my luggage between a KTX arrival and a flight?
Yes, but plan the timing. Station lockers are the simple option if you are moving between a train and a subway. If you are heading to the airport, note that 김포공항 and 제주공항 have very limited public storage — the practical route is to use a station locker or a staffed desk in the city first, then travel to the airport without your bags.
What if the locker is full?
At busy stations, large lockers do run out by mid-morning. The staffed 짐보관 데스크 is the fallback, and it will always have room. There is also usually a row of lockers a level up or on a different platform — ask a station employee, or say 짐보관소 어디 있어요, and they will point you to the one with space.
Is it safe to leave valuables inside?
Lockers are secure for bags, but neither lockers nor counters are insured. Keep your passport, wallet, and valuables with you. The staffed counter is no safer than a locker in that respect.
Do I need to book ahead?
For coin lockers, no — walk up. For a staffed counter on a busy weekend or holiday, some operators let you reserve a slot online, which is worth doing if you have a tight train connection.
