The recipes
Every block is: (1) consonant + vowel, (2) consonant + vowel + consonant, or a lone vowel with ㅇ standing in. 감 = ㄱ + ㅏ + ㅁ.
Vowels pick a side
Vertical vowels (ㅏ ㅓ ㅣ) hang on the right of the consonant. Horizontal ones (ㅗ ㅜ ㅡ) sit underneath. ㅡ decides at birth.

11,172 syllable blocks exist in Unicode. You need about 40 letters and one afternoon to unlock them.
The Korean alphabet, and why it takes an afternoon
Hangul is built from blocks rather than letters, and that single design decision is why it is learnable in an afternoon. Fourteen basic consonants and ten basic vowels combine into 11,172 possible syllables — a complete writing system designed to be learned, not inherited.
Start with the shape of a syllable: a starter consonant, a vowel, and sometimes a final consonant. Once the three positions are familiar, every syllable on this site stops looking like a drawing and starts looking like a machine you can read.
- Learn the shapes before the sounds — the sounds are the same letter regardless of position.
- Compound vowels are two shapes, not two letters. Read them as one block.
- Batchim (받침) has only seven sounds. Knowing which one to say is the whole skill.
- Type a few syllables every day. Reading is separate from writing, and the IME helps less than you expect.
